The Role
The Fleet Manager owns day-to-day readiness, safety, compliance, and cost performance of the assigned fleet and shop operations. This role partners with the operations team to keep equipment available, plans and executes preventive maintenance, and leads technicians and vendors to minimize unplanned downtime and total cost.
This role will report to the Operational President with regular guidance and support from the National Fleet Director.

Safety and Compliance
• Promote a safety-first culture across shop and field-support activities; maintain a clean, organized work environment.
• Perform required shop/site safety inspections and audits; document findings, communicate risks, and close corrective actions.
• Support compliance programs as applicable (eDVIR/DVIR process support, annual inspections, and response to out-of-service issues).

Operations Partnership
• Maintain regular communication with Operations leadership to plan fleet availability, prioritize repairs, and align on equipment needs.
• Identify issues early, elevate risks, and recommend solutions that improve safety, availability, and cost performance.
Shop Leadership and Execution
• Lead technicians and support staff; set clear responsibilities, performance expectations, and safe work boundaries based on skill level.
• Manage day-to-day workflow, scheduling, and work order prioritization to meet operational timeframes.
• Review and approve work orders and technician time; coach quality and productivity and address issues before they become repeat failures.
• As needed, step into a technician role to assist with repairs during labor shortages or urgent operational demands.
Preventive Maintenance, Systems, and Telematics
• Plan and execute preventive maintenance schedules to enterprise standards; ensure timely completion and documentation.
• Ensure accurate and timely data entry in the maintenance software system in accordance with company guidelines.
• Ensure telematics/GPS units are installed and reporting; troubleshoot and coordinate repair of non-reporting units.
Cost Control, Parts, and Vendor Management
• Operate a cost-effective shop within budget; estimate and communicate repair costs and alternatives to stakeholders.
• Manage parts and inventory controls including stocking levels, returns, and reduction of unused and high-value parts.
• Build and manage vendor relationships; monitor service levels and routinely compare pricing to ensure best value.
Continuous Improvement and Communication
• Continually improve fleet processes, technician training, and use of organizational tools and support systems.
• Attend local leadership meetings and present fleet safety and financial performance updates as required.
• Support special projects through completion as defined by leadership; travel required, visit to support multi-state shops, vendors, job locations, conferences and/or off-site meetings.

Qualifications and Experience Required
• Strong track record of safety-focused work practices.
• General knowledge of OSHA and EPA requirements related to maintenance activities and shop safety.
• 5+ years of experience as a technician/mechanic in an equipment or truck repair environment.
• 2+ years of experience in a shop or fleet leadership role with budget responsibility, cost control, and the ability to estimate and communicate repair costs.
• Experience with electronic work order and preventive maintenance tracking systems.
• Ability to think critically, prioritize effectively, and make sound decisions that balance cost, productivity, and reliability.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred
• Working knowledge of federal DOT regulations applicable to intrastate and interstate fleets.
• Experience supporting a geographically dispersed fleet.
• CDL license holder.
