It’s that time of the month once again! Time to get to know another one of our Hylan Family members. This month, we took some time to speak to Troy Clater from Down Under Construction (DUC). He is a Construction Manager that has been with DUC for almost 10 years! As President of DUC Daryl Dunbar said, “He’s really stepped up over the years and has taken on every task with the utmost enthusiasm. We couldn’t be happier having on our team.” Keep reading to learn more about him and the amazing work he does for the Hylan group.

Hi Troy! Let’s start off with learning more about what led you to your position at Down Under Construction (DUC)?

A friend of mine that I used to work with started working at DUC. One day he told me to consider working with DUC, so he had Daryl Dunbar (President of DUC) give me a call. We discussed the position and what working at DUC would entail and eventually came to an agreement. I started working as a job supervisor where I was running only one crew, and then I worked my way up to my current position (of Construction Manager) after five or six different positions held within the company. I started to lead more projects and transitioned to doing safety. I finally became a Construction Manager and nine years later, here I am!

What does your role as Construction Manager entail at DUC?

I do all of the scheduling for the jobs I work and make sure to visit them all as well.  I do all the hiring for my crews, supervise and train on all of our safety and also handle our fleet.

What do you most enjoy about working for DUC, and Hylan as a whole?

I like keeping busy and having a lot to do. Working in such a fast-paced environment keeps my days going by fast. It can get chaotic at times, but I enjoy it!

Any recent exciting projects at DUC that you can tell us about?

I see just about every project, so that’s a tough question! I’m not so hands on with the work, but I visit most sites and help with any issues. Right now we are doing an interesting project in Ashburn that is a Fiberlight-Equinix build; a 24 way system. It’s very challenging due to the concentration of data centers in the area and the massive amount of fiber and other utilities already in the ground. Our crews work miracles everyday they’re out there; it’s more like surgery rather than digging your average trench.

What are you most looking forward to in the future at DUC?

I am really looking forward to continuing to grow as the company grows and doing whatever I can to help.

Where do you live?

I live in Winchester, Virginia currently. I’m from Front Royal, which is about 20 minutes from where I live now.

Where did you go to school or get training?

I went to school in Front Royal (Virginia), where I graduated from Warren County High School.

If you could address young college graduates or apprentices who are interested in a career with Down Under Construction or a similar company, what’s the best advice you can give them?

Work hard! There’s room to move and show off your potential!

Now, just to get a little personal! Tell us what you like to do in your free time.

Usually when I’m off, I’m working on my house or spending as much time as possible with my kids. What I do with DUC takes a lot of time during the week, so I really take advantage of my time off by spending as much of it as possible with my kids.

Please join us in thanking the hard work that Troy does for Hylan. As an employee who is often in the field, he has continued to work hard despite the challenges posed by COVID-19. At Hylan, we have worked hard to ensure our employees feel safe and are safe when working on projects that are absolutely essential to the world as we know it today. We will continue to ensure that everybody stays connected in a time when it is more important than ever. We look forward to the next installment of the Get to Know Our Hylan Family blog series where we will speak with a Hylan Family member from Western Utility!
