It’s a new month, which means it’s time for a new edition of Get to Know Our Hylan Family! This month we are hitting the West Coast for some sun with Hylan West, where we meet Mauricio Lozano, South West Region Safety Coordinator. Keep reading to learn more about him!

What led you to your position at Hylan West?

Pure luck. My dream job was to work for NASA as an engineer, but that became impossible very early (after my first D- minus in Physics).  After that I was just trying to make a living doing whatever was available, although I always treated every job with respect and enthusiasm. Then, I happened to come across   Hylan West and joined its team and I couldn’t be happier.  Now I feel like an engineer working for NASA.

How long have you been with the company?

7 years.

What does your role as South West Region Safety Coordinator entail at Hylan West?

My role is to manage the company’s safety program and to ensure that everybody on site is following safety protocols. I also do what I can to sell the safety concept to everybody, with the goal that we are all intrinsically motivated to work safely.

What do you most enjoy about working for Hylan West, and Hylan as a whole?

I enjoy benefitting from such experienced coworkers. I’m able to lean on people who have so much more experience than I do, which allows me to greatly expand my knowledge. I also value that I have the opportunity to be myself and make a positive difference.

Can you tell us about a project and/or accomplishment that you are most proud of with your work at Hylan West?

I believe in continuous improvement and strive for it every day. There is something positive to take out of any and all situations bad or good.  Above all, right now, I am just glad I have been able to keep my job.

Where do you live?

Phoenix, Arizona

Where did you go to school or get training?

I have attended Phoenix Community College, Arizona State University, and Columbia Southern University. I have also taken a bunch of OSHA training classes at UCSD Outreach School. With so much to learn, I believe that only makes me a qualified learner.

If you could address young college graduates or apprentices who are interested in a career with Hylan West or a similar company, what’s the best advice you can give them?

Hard work and a little more. Ask lots of questions, don’t stop learning.

Now, just to get a little personal! Tell us what you like to do in your free time.

What I enjoy most on my free time is being around my kids and wife bugging them with practical jokes and stories. On weekends, I throw for them an “occasional” regular early morning karaoke show, that nobody other than my six year old son (and best friend), seems to appreciate. If there is any time available, I also enjoy reading.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mauricio for his hard work as a safety coordinator, he plays a huge role in ensuring the rest of our Hylan Family stays safe on the job. When we asked Slade Ottney, President of Hylan West why Mauricio should be highlighted this month, he said: “Mauricio is a stellar, self-motivated and disciplined leader in the company who really values the success and safety of his coworkers. He constantly goes above and beyond demonstrating a strong commitment to building a zero-incident safety culture at Hylan West. We are proud to have Mauricio in our corner as a champion of safety for the Hylan Teammates.”
